NHL Playoff Betting Guide 2026: Conference Winner Betting
Cup futures require navigating four rounds. Series bets are single-round limited. Conference winner bets sit right in the middle. Two or three rounds of action, better prices than the Cup market, and less efficiently priced than either extreme. That's the whole appeal. Here's where the value actually is.

The 2026 conference winner board
Eastern Conference:
- Tampa Bay Lightning: +215
- Carolina Hurricanes: +220
- Buffalo Sabres: +700
- Ottawa Senators: +850
- Pittsburgh Penguins: +900
- Montreal Canadiens: +1100
Western Conference:
- Colorado Avalanche: clear favorite
- Dallas Stars: +1000 range
- Vegas Golden Knights: +1100 range
- Edmonton Oilers: +1200 range
- Utah Mammoth: +3000 range
Tampa at +215 and Carolina at +220 reflect the genuine quality gap between these two teams and the rest of the East. Both carry legitimate 25 to 30% Eastern Conference championship probability. Both prices are close to fair value. The real edge is further down the board.

The Eastern tier worth targeting
Buffalo Sabres at +700.
100 regular-season points. Tied with Carolina for second in the East. Positive goal differential. Elite offensive volume. The +700 price reflects one thing: public skepticism about a first playoff appearance in over a decade.
Teams with 100-plus points and positive goal differential win their conference at rates well above the 12.5% implied probability that +700 suggests. The narrative discount is real and it's your edge. Get in before the public warms up to them in Round 1.
Ottawa Senators at +850.
Their 15-3-3 run over the last 21 regular-season games creates genuine momentum not fully priced in here. Matchup against Carolina is tough but an upset path exists through their 25.29% power play and Brady Tkachuk making everyone's life miserable for six games.
Western Conference: Colorado dominates, value elsewhere
Colorado's conference winner price is priced accurately based on their 52-16-11 season and +94 goal differential. Advanced models put their true Western Conference probability at 35 to 42%. No edge there.
Where the Western value lives:
Dallas at +1000 with the injury caveat: If Heiskanen comes back in Round 2, this price is dramatically underpriced for what a healthy Stars team can do defensively. Conditional bet. Watch the injury reports.
Vegas at +1100: Built for playoff hockey regardless of regular-season positioning. Deep defensive structure and experienced coaching staff. The public is pricing their regular season. The sharps are pricing their May and June identity.
Using conference winner bets to hedge your Cup futures
This is the smartest use of this market and most bettors skip it entirely.
I had Carolina at +475 to win the Cup last year. They lost in the Conference Final. My whole Cup position gone. A conference winner hedge at +220 would have generated profit on the run that actually happened and offset most of the Cup futures loss.
Here's the math on a $50 bet on each:
- Carolina wins the East but loses the Cup Final: +$110 conference winner, -$50 Cup futures. Net positive $60 instead of -$50
- Carolina wins the Cup: Both cash. Returns +$237.50 (Cup) plus +$110 (conference) on $100 invested
The hedge works best on teams priced +400 to +800 in Cup futures where the conference winner creates meaningful hedge return without eliminating Cup upside. Carolina and Tampa both fit that structure perfectly.

When to buy conference winner futures
The opening 24 hours after the regular season ends. That's the window. Before public money flows toward obvious choices and compresses the top teams' prices.
Tampa at +215 and Carolina at +220 become +180 and +190 within days of public action. Buffalo at +700 compresses to +450 if they win Round 1 in dominant fashion. The price you want exists now.
After Round 1, prices reprice dramatically. A team at +700 entering the playoffs who wins their first series in six games might sit at +350 before Round 2 opens. The value is gone.
Buy in the first 24 hours or accept a worse number.
