World Cup Betting Terms Every Beginner Should Know

My first time on a sportsbook I stared at the screen for ten minutes genuinely unsure what half the words meant. Juice. Vig. Handicap. Push. Nobody explained any of it. I just picked something and hoped for the best. This glossary exists so you do not have to do that.

The Core Terms: Start Here

These are the words you will see on literally every bet you ever place.

Moneyline: A bet on who wins a specific match or outcome. In soccer it comes in three versions, not two.

Three-Way Moneyline (1X2): The standard soccer bet. Three possible outcomes: Team A wins (1), Draw (X), Team B wins (2). You pick one. If it happens, you collect.

Favorite: The team or outcome the market believes is most likely to happen. Shown with a minus sign. Example: France -160.

Underdog: The team or outcome the market believes is less likely. Shown with a plus sign. Example: Morocco +280.

Stake: The amount of money you are risking on a bet.

Payout: The total amount you receive back if your bet wins. Includes your stake plus your profit.

Understanding the Price: Vig, Juice, and Implied Probability

Vig / Juice: The sportsbook's built-in margin on every bet. It is why the combined implied probabilities on both sides of a market add up to more than 100%. The book makes money regardless of the outcome.

Implied Probability: The percentage chance the odds suggest an outcome has. Convert American odds like this:

  • Plus odds: Divide 100 by (odds + 100). Example: +300 = 100/400 = 25%
  • Minus odds: Divide the odds by (odds + 100). Example: -200 = 200/300 = 66.7%

Value: A bet has value when you believe the true probability of an outcome is higher than the implied probability the market is offering. This is the whole point of researching before betting.

Closing Line: The final odds available just before kickoff. The most accurate price because it has absorbed the most information.

The Draw and Its Markets

Draw: A tied result. Approximately 25-30% of World Cup group games end level. Draws are intentional, tactical, and common.

Draw No Bet (DNB): Removes the draw from the equation. If the game ends level, your stake is returned. Only win or lose on the match result.

Double Chance: Covers two of three possible outcomes in one bet. Examples:

  • Team A or Draw: you win if Team A wins or the game draws
  • Team B or Draw: you win if Team B wins or the game draws
  • Team A or Team B: you win as long as either side wins, not a draw

Push: A voided bet where your stake is returned. In Draw No Bet, a drawn result is a push.

Goals Markets

Over/Under (Totals): A bet on the combined number of goals scored by both teams. The line is usually set at 2.5:

  • Over 2.5: Three or more goals needed to win
  • Under 2.5: Two goals or fewer needed to win

Both Teams to Score (BTTS): A Yes or No market. Does each team score at least one goal? The final result and winner are irrelevant. Only whether both sides scored.

Win to Nil: Your chosen team wins the match AND keeps a clean sheet. Combines a win requirement with a shutout requirement. Pays more than a straight win because it is harder to achieve.

First Goalscorer: Which player scores the first goal of the match. Misses if your player scores second or later.

Anytime Goalscorer: Your player scores at any point during the 90 minutes. Hits at roughly double the rate of first goalscorer for the same players.

Spread and Handicap Terms

Goal Line / Asian Handicap: Levels the playing field by giving one team a virtual head start or deficit. Examples:

  • Spain -1.5 means Spain must win by two or more goals
  • Cape Verde +1.5 means Cape Verde wins your bet if they win, draw, or lose by exactly one goal

Correct Score: Predicting the exact final scoreline. Very hard to hit. Very high payout when it does.

Half-Time / Full-Time (HT/FT): Predicting the result at both halftime and at full time. Nine possible combinations. Pays well but has low hit rates.

Tournament and Futures Terms

Futures: Bets placed on long-term tournament outcomes. Examples include tournament winner, Golden Boot, and which teams reach specific stages. Odds are available months in advance.

Outright Winner: A futures bet on which team lifts the trophy.

Golden Boot: A futures bet on which player scores the most goals across the tournament.

To Advance / To Qualify: A knockout round market that settles after extra time and penalties. Settles on who actually progresses. Use this instead of the standard moneyline in knockout rounds.

90-Minute Rule: Most standard match bets settle at 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Extra time and penalties do not count. Critical to understand before betting knockout games.

Live Betting Terms

In-Play / Live Betting: Betting placed after kickoff while the game is in progress. Odds update in real time based on score, time remaining, cards, and possession.

Cash Out: An option some books offer to settle a bet early for a partial payout before the game finishes. Useful for locking in profit or cutting losses.

Steam Move: A sudden, sharp line movement across multiple books simultaneously. Usually signals professional money hitting a side.

Reverse Line Movement: When the line moves in the opposite direction from where most bets are being placed. Signals sharp professional money disagreeing with the public.

The Play

You do not need to memorize all of these before placing your first bet. Start with moneyline, over/under, Draw No Bet, and the 90-minute rule. Those four terms cover the vast majority of what you will actually need in the first two weeks of the group stage.
