Then I checked what the three individual bets would have returned as singles. Not dramatically different. The book had already priced the correlation in. That's the thing about SGPs. The legs aren't independent. And when they're not independent, the book adjusts the price accordingly.

An SGP combines multiple selections from a single match into one bet. Team to win plus over 2.5 goals plus a player to score, all from the same game, settled together.

The appeal is obvious. You're building a narrative around one match you actually care about. Spain dominates, scores three, Mbappé gets one. All connected, all logical, all cashed together at a meaningful combined price.

The math reality is less fun. When legs are correlated, meaning one event makes another more likely, books adjust the combined odds downward from what naive multiplication would produce. Spain winning and over 2.5 goals are heavily correlated. Spain winning and Spain's striker scoring are heavily correlated. The book knows this and prices it in. Your SGP pays less than you'd get backing each leg independently as singles.

Why Books Love SGPs

The book's margin on same game parlays is consistently higher than on straight bets or non-correlated multi-match parlays. Individual legs in a bet builder are sometimes shaded slightly worse than their standalone prices before correlation adjustments even happen. Then the correlation reduction on top.

When SGPs Are Actually Worth Building

Small entertainment bets on marquee matches. England to win, Kane anytime scorer, over 1.5 total goals in a soft group fixture. Three legs, narrative makes sense, stake is $5 or $10, the match is more fun because of it. Completely valid. Not a core strategy.

Promotional boosts that materially shift the math. Check the terms but don't ignore these entirely because the underlying product is generally worse than singles.

Hedge-style constructions where the legs express a specific tactical view. Over 2.5 goals combined with both teams to score when you think the match will be open and aggressive from both sides. These legs reinforce the same underlying read rather than just being correlated narratives. Still priced by the book with margin but at least your reasoning is coherent.

What to Avoid

Six to eight leg SGPs with corners, cards, exact scores, and three player props all stacked together for a massive payout. The book's margin is enormous on these. The probability of cashing is tiny. The payout looks exciting because it's designed to look exciting.

Using SGPs as your primary betting vehicle instead of singles. Experienced bettors use SGPs sparingly. Singles are where genuine edge gets expressed and measured. SGPs are entertainment with occasional big hits.
